He discusses farming and pioneer life in Minnesota's Mower and Otter Tail counties; expeditions against the Dakota Indians by General Alfred Sully (1864-1865) and Major Marcus A. Reno and General Alfred H. Terry (1876); the Northfield bank robbery by the James and Younger brothers (1876); and his rural schoolteaching career in Otter Tail County (1880s).
